Moving from Canada to Panama

Build your Canada-to-Panama move around a workable residence route, a documented Canadian departure and a realistic first-year budget.

The starting point

Confirm immigration eligibility and the treatment of each income source separately. A residence permit alone does not settle either country’s tax questions.

Start with the immigration route

Panama’s immigration authority lists retirement, employment, investment and other permit categories. Its specific-country route, often called Friendly Nations, includes an initial two-year provisional stage. The published requirements distinguish employment, real-estate investment and fixed-deposit options. A Canadian passport alone is not the complete application.

Ask a Panamanian immigration professional which route fits your household and current circumstances. Request a written list covering the principal applicant, dependants, work permission, renewal or permanent-residence steps and the conditions you must maintain.

  • For retirement: which pension evidence is accepted for the chosen route?
  • For employment: which employer documents and work authorization are required?
  • For investment: what must be held, by whom and for how long?
  • For dependants: what evidence and financial requirements apply to each person?

Prepare the Canadian side before departure

Use the Canadian residency guide to document homes, family arrangements and continuing ties. Add an asset inventory and a proposed timeline for both countries. Review departure tax before deciding what to sell or retain.

Canada and Panama have a tax-information exchange agreement. That agreement should not be treated as an income-tax treaty granting pension withholding reductions or a residence tie-breaker. Check the rules that actually apply to each payment.

For remote work or a business, ask where the work is performed, where management occurs and how income is classified locally. Do not build a tax budget on the assumption that every payment from a foreign customer is exempt. Have the destination adviser document the analysis.

Create a document plan with expiry dates

Build a checklist with a row for each applicant and each document. Have your immigration professional confirm which police, civil-status, pension, financial and health records apply. Before ordering documents, confirm the required format, translation, authentication and maximum age at submission.

Document questionWhy to settle it early
Which version does the receiving authority accept?A short certificate and a detailed record may not be interchangeable.
When does its validity period begin?Ordering too early can leave a document out of date.
Who handles translation and authentication? These steps can affect the appointment sequence.
Which original must travel with you?A scan may be useful for preparation but insufficient for submission.

Keep the latest requirements from your adviser beside the official category page. Record when each was checked and resolve differences before paying application costs.

Build a first-year budget using quotes

Separate one-time setup costs from the monthly cost of living. Request quotes for legal assistance, applications, document preparation, flights, temporary housing, deposits, insurance and shipping. For ongoing costs, include rent, utilities, internet, transport, food, healthcare and visits to Canada.

Write the currency and quote date beside every figure. Model a higher exchange cost and a longer period in temporary accommodation. Add any expected Canadian tax payment as its own reserve rather than burying it in the household budget.

  • Compare a short scouting stay with your expected daily routine.
  • Check reliable internet, access to care and transport at the actual address.
  • Ask insurers about exclusions and ongoing treatment before committing.
  • Keep an emergency travel reserve outside money committed to a residence investment.

Check travel rules and the first steps after arrival

Review Canada’s Panama travel advice for current entry requirements, local conditions and health information. Visitor entry conditions are separate from permission to reside or work. Confirm your authorized stay from the relevant authority and your entry documents.

Before travelling, create an arrival calendar: accommodation, immigration appointments, document handoffs, banking enquiries and local tax advice. Keep copies of submissions and receipts. After settling in, update the Canadian departure file with actual dates and arrangements so the record reflects what happened.
